DAFT PUNK!!! Please, just one more time... :'(

Today is just too much. Daft Punk, pioneers of electric dance music have announced their retirement. I never got to see them live but I felt their influence in so many shows that I went to. I can’t even count how many times "One More Time" or "Around the World" would be a part of a DJ’s set. Their influence in music is unmeasurable and will live on for generations to come.

Daft Punk is a French DJ duo that formed in 1993. They reached many milestones in their career and are responsible for countless careers. Their music reached commercial success with their platinum status and Grammy awards. They have worked with major artists, most recently with Pharrell and The Weeknd. They did a lot but one milestone that I want to highlight is how they changed the landscape of electric music to what we now know it and that is their 2006 Coachella set.

In the early 2000’s Coachella had established itself as the main indie music festival in the country. In a time when there continued to be a crackdown of raves and electric music, Coachella kept pushing it to the forefront. Before 2006, Coachella included DJ sets in their line-up, but the stages were lowkey and you had to already be a fan of electric music to want to go to those performances. But that all changed in 2006 as Daft Punk was scheduled to perform in the Sahara Tent. They opened up with a massive pyramid and an overall stage production that no one had experienced before. From that moment on EDM skyrocketed to the top of pop culture. More and more DJs started incorporating visual elements to their sets and festivals everywhere started producing larger and more complex stage productions. Years following their set, acts like Tiësto and Swedish House Mafia were able to perform at the Coachella Mainstage.

Two people brought electric dance music OUT of the underground and gave it back to the world. TWO PEOPLE! TWO PEOPLE did what no one else before them did! When I say 2 legends retired today…it truly is an understatement.
